The new census has only revealed a few of the facts, and it's one the government can blame on the people who created it. The data in the census was collected by Indigenous Affairs and Northern Development Canada (IAN) as part of the 2015-16 provincial budget.
Since 2014, IAN has used an automated process that allows it to collect demographic information about people in Canada, but it doesn't always show up in the census, because of a complex system that collects and presents information from multiple sources.
That's also where the real problem lies: The process is so complex and the information on the form is so difficult to obtain, that only those people most likely to answer a census question can be asked.
The result: In five years, the overall population of Indigenous Canadians and non-Indigenous populations in Canada has doubled.
A total of almost 40,000,000 people are Indigenous. And that number will double over the next decade.
A whole lot of Indigenous people now live in Canada.
The number of Indigenous Canadians is growing
The Canadian government says the 2015-16 Census will provide a record of the number of Indigenous Canadians. However, there are many numbers to work with when looking at the number of Indigenous people in Canada.
The main number the government is basing its claims about this year's census, based on the number of people who did not answer a census question or didn't live in a census town — or did not answer a census question where some form of land title wasn't entered — are that there are about 35,500 new non-Indigenous registered births that took place this year.
"We are still not at a high enough level of non-Indigenous population that we need a new estimate of the number of Aboriginal people in Canada, or how many non-Indigenous people we expect to find in 2018," said David Laidlaw, a senior policy researcher for the Canadian Centre on Policy Alternatives.
And as Laidlaw puts it, "the true number of non-Indigenous births is much higher than we might assume, since the number of non-Indigenous births may account for any potential increase in the number of births to children of Aboriginal descent that was expected after 2016."
A national census is much more than just getting a good snapshot of people living in different parts of Canada
But what counts when it comes to who should be in a census is far, far more than just a very good snapshot of a person's census data.
"That is an important metric for a national census that measures people's status and how they can access services an
