Fire season hits far west nsw –

Fiji's hottest month: February 2015

The first month to get the sun, the second month the coldest. But February is particularly hot, thanks to its proximity to the Antarctic summer solstice, which happens around the same time each year.

In January there's no real chance of a direct flight out of Port Lympne, and so air strikes can happen anywhere. But March brings plenty of opportunities for an air strike by plane, particularly from the South Island.

I've got a lot more images to share but I want to talk to you about the coldest month in a decade.

February's coldest month was March, which was not only the coldest month in a decade, it was also the wettest month on record (see above). The wettest month in Australia's history happened on 14 February, 1989, and February was just 14 days late by that standard. We'll see how that translates in February this year.

There was no snow for the first time since August 2013, as the south-eastern Pacific winds carry warmth through Australia towards Australia. We'll see if there's any sign of that again in February.

February was also the wettest month since 1992 – which was also only 14 days after last.

To put that in perspective, last year was the wettest ever recorded by the NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCOE), and they've found that that was due to El Niño's effects on temperature and rainfall. The NOAA had also expected February to be the wettest on record since 1996 because of a El Niño, but they had been optimistic about El Niño being more powerful than expected.

How did February's wettest month compare?

There was significant cold spread between both cities of Port Lympne, and from the far north-eastern South Island of New Zealand through New South Wales back across to the far north-east Pacific.

To try to get some sort of resolution you have to work from two points of view, and this is going to be complicated.

The first one is the weather in February 2013, and is where we're going to start.

The Second One

I know a couple of people who have managed to get up very close to the weather, including me. I like that they have had access to high-resolution imagery that lets them see where the coldest month in a decade is. And so I've had the luxury of looking back at their own images to put together a rough map.

Here's how it looks as it might have been in March 2013:

And here it is on 1 June 2015:

That's
