Trying to understand what that clunking noise means before I visit a shop

My car started making this metallic clunking sound whenever I go over bumps, but only on the driver's side. I hate walking into a garage completely clueless because I feel like they can tell me anything and I would just have to trust them. I have been trying to find a detailed overview of suspension noises online to educate myself a bit before I hand over my keys. I came across an article that gives a pretty thorough explanation of the signs you need to visit a car workshop in Al Quoz and it mentioned ball joints and bushings as common culprits. Has anyone dealt with a similar clunking sound that turned out to be something specific like a sway bar link?
